Learn Golf Swing Sequence with Kip Puterbaugh

We recently had the opportunity to visit the Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad, California and have a golf lesson with Kip Puterbaugh, a local teaching legend and Top 100 Teacher. Kip has been teaching for over 30 years and has built a successful business with the help of his two sons, who both played Division One college golf.

Kip gave us a tour of the facility, which includes two hitting bays and a TaylorMade fitting center. He then shared his teaching philosophy, which is based on observing the great players and finding out what they all have in common.

Kip believes that the golf swing is like a house: you have to start with the foundation (grip, stance, and posture), then build the walls (backswing), and finally add the roof (sequencing and emotion). He also believes that the golf swing should be a swing, not a manipulation or direction of the club.

Finally, Kip gave us a lesson on how to get more power in our swings. He had us swing a heavy device to get a sense of the sequence and motion, and then had us swing a nine iron to get a feel for the same motion. He showed us how to swing with more freedom and trust the swing, and how to create speed past the ball.

Kip’s teaching philosophy and lesson were invaluable, and we are grateful for the time he spent with us. We look forward to continuing to work on our golf swings and improving our game.

Kip also showed us how to use our lower body to initiate the downswing and our upper body to follow, and how to avoid casting the club. He had us take a practice swing over the ball to get a feel for the motion, and then set the club down and try to do the same thing.
