Let's see, we're on some nice fringe again, a little over 30 feet out, uphill, and the green breaks very gently by the flag from right to left. The first thing to decide on a shot like this is, do I putt or do I chip? I'm gonna chip with my 8-iron. I chose the 8-iron because if I land the ball just over the fringe, it should be the perfect club to roll the ball pin-high. On tour, I do putt a lot from the fringe. Putting from the fringe is much easier to get the correct speed and get the ball closer to the hole. When you chip the ball, you eliminate the chance of getting a bad hop off the fringe, but it's much harder to control your distance when you pitch. If you're just looking to get it close, the percentage shot is to putt from here. Since this shot is short and uphill, I should be able to control the speed easily. So I'm going to be aggressive and try to hole this shot with a chip. If it were longer or downhill, I'd putt every time. I set up with the ball inside my back foot. My clubface is square and my hands are slightly in front of the ball. Those three things in combination are going to make the ball roll after it lands. Oh geez, oh, that was close. Thought I had you.
