This is "Golf Life." Here's your host, Mike Billingsley. I'm standing on Omni Interlocken Golf Club here in Broomfield, Colorado, and of course, behind me is the spectacular Colorado Rockies. But I want to take you south and west of here, across the border into northern Arizona, where the landscape shifts from pine and snow to something almost otherworldly. One of the most exclusive private luxury sanctuaries in American golf, Seven Canyons Golf Club in Sedona, Arizona. A few years ago, they completed what they call a grand restoration. Tom Weiskopf's original design, brought back exactly as he intended. This is "Golf Life," and we're taking you inside. Seven Canyons sits inside a box canyon in the red rock country outside Sedona. There is literally one road in. The result is a golf experience unlike anything else in America, and that was exactly what Tom Weiskopf set out to create when he designed it in 2003. Can you imagine playing golf in the Grand Canyon? No, you can't imagine it, but that's kind of what this is. The course kind of meanders through several little canyons that it feeds into. So, that's what I liken it to. It's like playing golf in a national park. Weiskopf's philosophy here was inspired by the great links courses of Scotland. Lay the course on the land and let gravity do the work. The restoration brought that vision back precisely. His affinity for courses across the pond in Scotland, that kind of links-style course, that's what he wanted to design here. There's a lot of this course that is really laid on the ground. It's right on the topography of the ground. There's runoffs on the greens. There's falloffs on fairways. So, Tom likes to have those kind of shot values where you're using gravity to move the ball instead of up in the air. So, his original design was that, and we have really kind of done our job of restoring it to that. Tom Weiskopf considered Seven Canyons one of the finest courses of his career as a golf architect. Unfortunately, he passed away, but we had the absolute privilege and benefit of having him here in May before he passed away, finished up the whole master plan of the course. And unfortunately, he didn't get to be around to see the new short game area. It's such a beautiful place. We call it a practice park. And then around that short game area, we have seven different tee pads that range in distance from about 15 yards up to about 105 yards, and you can play those in a circle around a central green, and we call that Tom's Secret Seven. My husband, Tom, was so excited to get the job at Seven Canyons originally, and when you ask Tom to do a course, you get Tom Weiskopf. He tried to do, I think, as little as possible to the land. He's a great steward of the land. If Tom was here, he'd say, "I design to every player." Men, women, children, pros. He designs routing for a reason. We've been through several different routings at Seven Canyons, but we're back to the original, and Tom's applauding from heaven, so very happy about it. And for those who want to make this setting a permanent part of their lives, Seven Canyons offers membership options, from fractional villa ownership all the way to private residences up to 10,000 square feet, all inside the gates of this extraordinary canyon community. So, the opportunity to join here, you don't have to be a resident. You have to be inside the gates. There's everything from fractional ownership, where you buy a tenth of a share of a spectacular villa, and that gets you 28 block days a year. And when you're here, you have all the privileges of membership. There are three different golf memberships. Plus, you can access the course by staying at Enchantment Resort or a rental at the Enclave at Seven Canyons. This attracts people from all walks of life, including celebrities and champions, like avid golfer Roger Clemens. Welcome. So, here we are at Seven Canyons. Another beautiful day, Chamber of Commerce of course, and we got some fun coming up. I got some really cool, what we call celebrities, old-time great friends. And food. And we're going to play a little golf. We're going to raise some money for charities while we're at it. So, doesn't get much better than this. Every 15 minutes, there's another postcard view around here, so just take a look. Come on. I think to say that I'm kind of blown away would be a understatement. Tremendous topography. I mean, the beauty is beyond belief. I had no idea that Sedona possessed this kind of beauty. I always heard that it was great, but it's always an undersell. It's way better than you expected. I'm really, really happy to be here. You know what I noticed? So many people hiking. It seems like a very healthy place to be. And so, if you want to call it a vortex or just a spirit or a vibe, it seems like that kind of a place, where people who are here are active, and they're doing things, and they're probably better because of it. I can see why people want to live here and why people visit here. I can assure you that this is not my last time here. Just take a look. For me, it's the prettiest golf course in the state, and I've played pretty much all of them. So, it's just beautiful everywhere you look. It's beautiful. The golf course is great. Tom Weiskopf did a great job with the golf course. It's in great shape. People got to come out and see this. It's beautiful. Sedona's world-renowned. Everybody knows Sedona. Doesn't matter what country you go to, people know Sedona. You go outside any state in the union, and they ask about Sedona. I think that it's enchanted is what you might say, but it's one of the wonders of the world, I think. Everywhere you look, the red rocks, and it's just incredible. I've been to Sedona before but never to Seven Canyons, and this is a little slice of heaven. It's just awesome. I love it here, and I think this is a great retirement community. The weather's fantastic. A lot of building, a lot of development I'm seeing around here, and gorgeous houses. So, I think it's as good as anything I've been around. So look, we were late last night, so I got in at about midnight. So I didn't see any of this until I got up this morning. Spectacular. Everywhere you look, you got the red mountains, and then this golf course is dropped right in the middle of it. I'll be back. This won't be my last time. Seven Canyons is one of those places that reminds you why golf is more than just a game. A Tom Weiskopf design he considered among the best of his career. A private luxury sanctuary inside a box canyon in Sedona, where membership options range from fractional ownership all the way to private residences, and a community of people, champions, celebrities, and everyday golfers who found something genuinely special in northern Arizona. Seven Canyons deserves to be on your list. We're going to be back with more "Golf Life" here in a moment. When we return, we share an exclusive look at a lesson series you don't want to miss. These are lesson series, and they're really dynamic, and one of those that we've done is with Mike Malaska. It's available over at golflife.com, but right now, we're going to share a part six of this lesson series that is just a true jewel. I think you're going to really enjoy this. It's never been seen before on TV, so check it out. Week six. Now we're going to start talking about how you use your lower body. This becomes really critical, and we're going to start with just a little pitch shot. So we're going to start with your left hip. Now, initially, when I used to do this, I thought it was more people's right hip that was the biggest problem. But the reality, it's how your left leg works is a big problem. Right's also, but we're going to do both. We're going to start with the left. If I set up and I was going to hit a little pitch shot, as the club's going through the ball, my left leg pushes my left hip out of the way. So it's just pushing my left hip socket straight back. There is no turn in a golf swing. Turn is an effect. Your body understands straight line forces. That's how it works. So what I see most people do, if I turn and face the camera here, they're going to hit a little pitch shot. If you watch my left hip, there's my left hip socket. They go like this, and they start into the ball, and their left hip socket stays there, and then they push with their right. So their hips keep turning, but this hip socket doesn't move back. So what happens? They're moving closer to the ball. So what you start with is you start by hitting little pitch shots where this left leg learns how to push this left hip out of the way as the club goes through the ball. Now, it's not straighten your left leg. See, I can straighten my leg. It doesn't do anything to my hip. So as I come into the ball, my left leg is pushing my hip out of the way. Through impact, my left knee is still flexed. That's why I don't hurt my back anymore. You don't have to hyper extend your knee. This doesn't really mean anything other than it just locks your knee and it sets you up for knee injuries. So as you're coming into the ball, your left leg just pushes your left hip out of the way. It just pushes it out of the way. Pushes it out of the way. Pushes it out of the way. So you start with pitch shots with your left side. Now we go to full swing. I'm set up, I'm going to hit a ball. Here's what happens. As I start back, what does my right leg do? My right leg pushes my right hip back. You have four ball and socket joints in your body, your shoulders and your hip sockets. If your hip sockets are tight, you are done Because what happens now is now your hips are locked, and for my hip to move, my leg has to straighten. So this is all tight. See, my hips are loose enough that when I turn back, when I push my hip socket back, my pelvis rotates on top of my femur. See, the rotation is supposed to come in your hip socket, not in your lower lumbar spine. If you lock your hip socket, then all the twisting comes out of your lower lumbar spine. You want to hurt yourself, and that's where a lot of guys are going. So what we're doing now is I get set up here, and on the backswing, as I go back, my right leg is just pushing my right hip out of the way. Then I come into the ball, and my left leg is pushing my left hip out of the way. So right leg pushes my right hip socket back, left leg pushes my left hip socket back. So it's just push back, push back. And that's what stabilizes your hips. And my pelvis, when you watch that swing, you'd say, "Well, your hips rotate." I don't feel turn at all, and I feel zero pressure in my lower lumbar spine. Now, half of my career was spent restricting my hip, get here, and then fire my hips. That's why I ended up herniating two discs in my lower back, and it's how this pushes this hip back, and this one gets pushed back. By the way, when you're doing that, where do you feel a lot of your force or weight going in your feet? For so long, I heard people talk about, "Get athletic. Get on the balls of your feet." What is that? Are you kidding? So what I see is everybody's up here on their toes, and they're trying to play up here. All of the things we have now with all the pressure mats, what they're finding is force stays a lot further back in people's feet than they think. So when I set up to the ball, when I go back, my weight goes back to my right heel. Then it goes into the middle of my feet, and then it goes to my left heel. It never goes out to my toes. Now, there's a few players you see on tour who come up on their toes, no question, but they go like this. So where's this going? So the force, even though they're on their toes, the force that's in those plates is getting pushed backwards. So this one pushes back, this one pushes back. Here's what you can do if you go to the gym or you're at home. At the gym, they have things called cable crosses. They're pulley systems that have arms. If you put the arms right down here, so the cable's right there, so there's the pulley off your left foot. You take a hold of the pulley, and you get the wire on the same angle your club would be, and then what you do is you go pull. So you use this hip to pull the weight back. So you pull it back. Now, if you have two cables on both sides, this one pulls, and then as you let this one down, then this one pulls. So what are my hips doing? My right hip's pushing back, my left hip's pushing back. Right hip pushes back, left hip pushes back. I've never seen anybody on a pulley system go like this. I've never seen it. Or go here and then go to try to pull the other way. They all go boom, boom. Well, that's exactly what my hips are doing in my golf swing. So this week six was about how your body moves. Now, if you follow this process and you go through what I told you each week, and then you review each week, by the sixth week, you're going to be amazed at how much better you're going to hit the ball. So you get these things down, you're going to see a big difference in your game. I'll guarantee it, because I've watched it time and time and time again. It's a process of learning. So I know this is going to be great for you. I know it's going to help all of you, and I look forward to meeting you all in the future, and hopefully you're hitting the ball a lot further than you normally hit it, and hopefully you're in your own fairway and not in mine. Head to GolfLife.com right now. You can access the full lesson series, from putting, chipping, short shots, and the full swing. Stick around. More Golf Life for your game in a moment. We're inside the Golf Life studio. And folks, we've got our ForeSight Falcon and our PuttView, two of the leading companies in golf technology. Come along. I want to show you some amazing integration between these two great systems. So we're playing a par three today. We've got Reese on the tee. A pretty good stroke there, and he just misses it, so he'll have to putt or chip off of that lie. Jake's on the tee, trying to hit it into this par three here, 171. Oh, he puts a nice stroke. Oh, a little over the top. Pulled it a bit So neither one of them on their green at the moment, so they got to play off. Oh, what a play. Okay, Reese back up on the tee. He's got just a little chip up here. You can see how interactive ForeSight is. It really is great. So as you can see, Jake's got a shot on his PuttView, which is the exact same shot on the ForeSight, which is that great chip up. Let's see how he does here. And it tracks his ball straight into the cup. And now you can see that the PuttView is setting up for Reese's shot in a completely different spot. So PuttView is interpolating, and it's giving us a full representation of exactly what that putt would. That is a downhill putt with a little bit of a right to left, and he sinks that. So great putters, great players, and it puts the score right up on the PuttView, which is really a cool interactive feature. So they're back over to the ForeSight. Now, folks, you can do this like we have done, where you have a separate green, this nice large green, if you have enough space, and then have a simulator with the ForeSight, and you use the FSX Play software, and that integrates with your PuttView, and you can put your PuttView into your actual enclosure simulator area. Your group can play in that small setting. So if you have a home simulator set up, you could get those great launch monitors from ForeSight, integrate that, bring your PuttView right into your environment, and now you're playing golf on the golf course. It's awesome because there's so many courses to choose from in the FSX Play software. And then when you add the PuttView, the PuttView integrates, and it just ties together with the two systems really easily. It was a super easy setup for us, and the PuttView immediately talked to it. Once you hit it on the green, it gives you the putt. So here you can see, while I've been talking, Reese hit a putt on a flatter green. So now he has a putt here on a 0% slope, which is a pretty dead straight putt, but it's the distance that he hit it to the cup on the ForeSight, and he's a pretty good putter, this kid. He's putting the pressure back on Jake here. So what's Jake's putt like? Well, it looks like Jake was pretty good at actually hitting the ball right at the pin. So he's got an uphill putt because that's about a 3.5% grade up there where he's at, and he just knocks that in, boom. And now they're tied. So they can continue playing. And like I say, your setup can be very easy. You can have your enclosure, have your PuttView integrated into your simulator, and have your ForeSight with the software, and the two computers talking together, and it's really an awesome, easy integration. I really enjoy sharing with you guys the technology, and obviously PuttView and ForeSight are great partners, bringing great technology to the game of golf, and we will be back with more "Golf Life" in just a moment. I've been spending some time out on the golf course with some new gear lately, and I want to share with you what I've actually found out on the course. Tite Eyewear is the first piece of gear I want to show you. These guys are awesome. I've been wearing the Tite eyeglasses for several weeks of golf, and including a lot of golf rounds out here in Colorado, where you get everything from bright sun to flat overcast skies. In those in-between light conditions, clouds changing, not quite bright, these work really well. The tint is dialed in for golf. You pick up contours on the green. You see slopes you might not otherwise see, and the sun protection is really solid without going too dark. And something I didn't expect, they don't give you that heavy, foggy feeling. You know what I'm talking about, when you have darker lenses? No, these, I don't have to take them off. You kind of forget they're on, and that's a good thing. And on really bright Colorado bluebird days, like maybe today, they're a little light on the tint. They might run on the lighter side, so I might switch to something a little darker on this day. But on most of the days, the majority of the rounds that I've been playing, they were exactly right. Tite Eyewear, T-I-T-E, titeeyewear.com is where you get them, and they're worth looking at if you've been frustrated by glasses that work in one condition and not another. I really like them. Another product I've been using is the Blue Tees Captain Air rangefinder, and it's become one of those things that you just reach for without thinking about it. This thing is really great. The laser does exactly what you need, fast, accurate yardage. And one thing I appreciate is that you get front and back green distances, not just the flag. Now, the Blue Tees app is genuinely good. It comes on your phone. Everything you'd want, hole layouts, hazard distances, scoring, shot tracking. You get GPS on your way around the course, and you pull out the laser when you need a precise number. And the two work together. Neither one feels like a compromise. But here's one thing I really didn't expect to love, the find your rangefinder feature. Folks, we all know that the number one thing that people leave behind on a golf course is... That's right. I thought I'd left mine the other day after a round. I opened the app, and it turns out it was in the car. Could have been a lot worse. It's a great laser. The app is excellent, and it's got that built-in safety minded for those of us who are absent-minded. Blueteesgolf.com, that's where you get it. I've been playing the BGT ForTo Speed Flight shaft for a few weeks now. BGT is Breakthrough Golf Technology, and what I can tell you is my drives feel more solid, and I'm seeing a squarer club face at impact more consistently. Now, the technology behind it is called Advanced Torque Control. It's designed to resist the twist that happens in a shaft when you're swinging fast. When a shaft torques at the top of your swing, the face can open or close before you even make contact, and the Speed Flight is built to minimize that. The result for me has been tighter dispersion, more consistent distance, and I'm actually picking up yards. The shaft is lightweight, so you're going to get more speed, but it plays like a stiff shaft in terms of feel. The club face is where you expect it to be when you arrive at impact. You get the distance of a lighter shaft without the looseness. The BGT ForTo Speed Flight. If you've been fighting inconsistency off the tee, it's worth asking your fitter about breakthroughgolftech.com. We really appreciate you joining us here on "Golf Life." We'll see you next time. Make sure you visit golflife.com to gain access to free golf videos, and follow us on social media for daily golf content. We'll see you next time.
